New Source Engine for Half-Life 3?

Should Half-Life 3 be developed on a new Source 2 engine or built using the current Source engine? Half-Life 2 brought us the amazing Source engine with great facial animation and quality graphics. The Source engine, by design, is made to be modular and easily updatable. Valve has shown us its capabilities with its latest release, Portal 2. If Half-Life 3 was released today I think we all would be more concerned about the game play rather than the graphics. It’s not in Valve’s nature to develop breathtaking graphics because they want their games to be played by all and not by the few video game enthusiasts who have tons of cash to throw at the latest and graphics computer hardware. Sure, the current Source engine does show its age compared to other video games, but is it good enough for today’s gamers and future games?

For a game engine over 8 years old, Source has certainly stood the test of time.

If we were to see a new Source engine I think it would have to offer us something more than better graphics. It would have to be something significant and too amazing not to build a new game engine. Something that springs to mind is a destructible environment. I’m not talking about breaking crates open with your crowbar, but bringing down entire walls because there are no other ways out. The developers of Battlefield 3 managed to create beautiful destructible environments and it stands without reason Valve could do the same with a new Source engine. What better way to showcase this with a highly anticipated Half-Life 3.

Only Valve knows how much life they can get out of the aging Source engine. Maybe they are crafty enough to have developed a game engine that does not age?

When the day comes for Half-Life 3 development to begin, will it, should it, or won’t it be developed on a new Source engine?

The Source Engine will probably just be updated enough to be mistaken as “Source 2″.

They have to make another engine! Just look at Crysis 2 or Battlefield 3 graphics! (yes they are a lot different from half life, but they’re still in the same genre ~FPS)

i think that valve is waiting until next year for the eventual release of ps4 and xbox 720 because the new half life will be released in an entirely new gaming engine that would make modern graphics look like 8 bit graphics

valve say they are just goin to update their source engine, i dont think so it is goin to be source 2, i mean look at csgo,it looks like a realistic version of call of duty and that is just the same old 2004 source engine, so it is obviously just the source engine being upgraded into a new look

Very interesting. If it’s how you describe it, the Source2 engine would be wonderful! As it turns out, I wouldn’t mind HL3 still being on the Source Engine. I’ve grown to know the source engine so well! It’s like a friend to me.
